Waiters, on your marks…
The La Cala de Mijas Lions took part in their first ever Waiters’ Race on Saturday, 29 March.
Many local bars, restaurants and waiters volunteered (or did they volunteer?) to represent their establishments. Help raise money for charity. Artisanal market stalls were set up outside the Tenencia de alcaldía de Mijas, where swift servers lined up to get registered, and then it was off to the starting line for a race against time. Each server was in a race with the clock while holding a tray containing a glass or water, a coffee cup and a croissant. The objective was to race down Calle Marbella to El Torreón and the finish line, where local celebrity and compere John Sharples was entertaining the crowds of onlookers.
Eskina sent their representatives down with sponsorship forms completed. After the time trial and the waiters’ attempts to get through the crowds with as little spillage as possible, the forensics team performed a 10-minute examination, using microscopically precise methods, of how much water and coffee was still in the receptacles. Brad Carolan, from Bridges, won the first La Cala Waiters Race. This race was the first of its kind in the town.
As the Drang drummers pumped up the crowd, the total winnings continued to be calculated. The Lions, as well as the staff at La Cala de Mijas, deserve a big thank you. A great day was had by all in support of a good cause.
