The fourth annual awards ceremony was held at the Edgar Neville Auditorium, Malaga, on Thursday, 25 September 2025. This year, the Cala Lions Club received the Joan Hunt Award for Charity.
The Malaga Provincial Council, in conjunction with the Cudeca Foundation organized the event to recognize the contribution of foreign residents living in the province.
Mijas mayor Ana Mata presented this award. She called it “extremely deserved” and praised the club’s 46 years of collaboration with local government. Mata said that the group, which has over 30 members, performs daily charitable acts to support important projects in our community. She also highlighted the club’s vital role within the community.
Club president David Kay expressed the group’s gratitude, describing the recognition as “fantastic” and highlighting the organisation’s achievement of raising over €1.5 million for charitable causes. The club, which is largely made up of foreigners who call the Costa del Sol home, has spent 26 years helping vulnerable families, homeless people, children with medical problems, animal shelters and schools.
The Joan Hunt Awards were created to honor the work of Cudeca Founder Joan Hunt in palliative health. They also recognized seven other recipients.
Marisa Martín, Cudeca’s manager, described the gala as “inspiring”, noting how awardees contribute to a “more just and supportive Malaga Province”. Francisco Salado – the president of Malaga Provincial Council – praised the club for its efforts to support both foreigners and those who are at risk of exclusion.
La Cala Lions, well done!
