La Cala de Mijas invites residents to participate in an international Walkathon for Water this Wednesday, May 27. This is part of a Europe-wide initiative that aims to raise awareness about global water shortages.
The event, organized by the We Are Water Foundation in conjunction with resorts managed Hilton Grand Vacations raises money and brings awareness to the issue of lack of safe drinking water that affects millions of people around the world. The symbolic five-kilometre course reflects the terrible distances that children and families must walk each day in order to collect drinking water.
Walkathon for Water returns after successful previous events
Walkathon for Water is now in its fourth successful year. More than 1,200 people from different countries participated in previous Walkathons for Water events. These raised funds to support clean water projects and sanitation initiatives in India, Tanzania, and Colombia.
The Mijas walking event will be held on May 27, 2010 at 10am. It is part of a total of 20 walks in eight different countries that take place throughout the year.

The events are intended to bring attention to the fact that more than 2 billion people in the world still lack access to clean drinking water. Each kilometre that is walked as part of the campaign symbolizes a lighter burden for vulnerable communities who are searching every day for safe drinking water.
