Jamie Donaldson wins Staysure Marbella Legends Tour at Aloha Golf

Jamie Donaldson has won the second edition Staysure Marbella Legends Tour, at Aloha Golf. A final round of 64 gave him a 13-under par total. He beat Stephen Gallacher by one shot.

The Welshman avoided the play-off after holing an important birdie on the 18th hole, finishing one stroke ahead of Gallacher with 12 under. Thomas Bjorn took third place, while Churriana-born Miguel Ángel Jiménez ended the week fourth.

Donaldson shot a perfect card with eight birdies, even though he began the final day amongst a bunch of other players. The European Senior Masters in La Manga last season was Donaldson’s second senior victory. His career includes three DP World Tour championships and the winning Ryder Cup putting.

Donaldson, when reflecting on the final hole, said: “On Sunday, I had a poor shot on 18. I was trying to put it in the trees and it ended up there. Today, I was more conservative because of that. I went for a more aggressive stance off the tee, but made sure to hit it in the correct areas. I knew I could get there using a wood. It’s an extremely difficult hole. You must hit a fantastic drive. “We had a little breeze against us so I needed to make the perfect shot and I did.”

He said: “It was never easy for me to win.” Stevie was a friend and I wanted the best not only for him but also for me. “I’m so happy to have won by one shot.”

Earlier, Juan Quirós received a commemorative plaque as he brought his international career to a close. The prize-giving ceremony was attended by representatives of Marbella Town Hall, Turismo Costa del Sol, the Junta de Andalucía and the Real Federación Andaluza de Golf.
