Sir Keir started a full-throttle debate in Parliament over the comments of Nigel Farage (leader of Reform UK), who claimed that Jaguar Land Rover deserved to be bankrupt.

In a high-octane session of PMQs, the Labour Prime Minister didn’t hold back as he tore into Farage and his government critics – sparking gasps and jeers all around.

Starmer, proudly standing at the despatchbox, said that “first hand” he understood what a deal would mean for the workers, families and communities of the iconic British automaker.

But then came a screeching handbrake turn – and he aimed his fury straight at Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, accusing her of threatening to rip it up when it comes to Britain’s hard-won international deals.

Farage was the one who took the brunt of Starmer’s anger.

‘The Reform leader… What did he say about JLR? He said JLR should go bankrupt. Shame on you! Starmer shouted, shaking his heads as Farage looked at him, his jaw nearly hitting the green benches.

Backbenchers were clapping their hands in approval, while others sneered. Farage, the ever-showman, tried his best to make it look good.

An icon of national importance is on the line

JLR – still a symbol of Britain’s automotive industry despite its Indian ownership and Jaguar’s recent struggles– employs tens of thousands of workers across the Midlands and beyond. For many families, it’s more than just a carmaker – it’s pride.

Farage’s eyebrow-raising remark – reportedly made during a recent speech slamming government subsidies for big business – has sparked huge backlash.

Critics claim he has turned his back to British industry as a desperate effort to attract anti-globalists voters. Others say this is just the latest Farage-inspired faux pas. Even those outside of the political bubble rev their engines in protest.

Kemi Badenoch is yet to respond to Starmer’s claim that she plans to destroy the important trade deals which are crucial for JLR at this moment. But behind closed doors there are murmurs of unease among Tory ranks.
