Speaking European with Ivanildo Kembel

Ivanildo Kémbel: Speaking European

What brought you to Spain and why?
‘Originally I travelled back and forth a lot between Holland and Spain and each time I went back I found myself missing the outdoor living and long daylight hours we enjoy in Spain.’

Is it easy to move?
‘Once here you quickly realise it’s not all sun and sangria and the process of really settling is an interesting one. I could not shake the feeling I was on vacation and hadn’t unpacked properly for a long time. It was not difficult for me to build up a social network as an artist. It’s harder to make Spanish friends, but I have made some wonderful friendships. The Dutch are more likely to plan in advance, while the Spanish prefer to be more present and live each day. It has become a new way of life for me to mix both ingredients. I also appreciate the slower pace.  When you want to send a parcel or need a local mechanic, it can be a bit of a challenge. However, I have found that a friendly smile and making an effort with the language go a long way.

What is your favorite thing about Spain?
‘I believe you build your own happiness but I would have to say the breathtaking views and the sea at your doorstep still impacts me every day. It’s a different kind of day in the office.

What would you do to change Spain?
The list I could make would alter the very dynamics that attracted me to Spain.

Will you go back to the past?
I still love Holland, and spend a lot there with my family and for work. Marbella will be my new home.

Ivanildo performs all over the world, but he is often seen in Marbella at local events and venues.
