‘It’s not just self-righteous expats!’bullfighting protest challenges Spanish traditions outside Marbella bullring


PROTESTORS rallied to promote animal welfare, and call on local and federal authorities to permanently ban bullfighting. They argued that the practice violated basic ethical principles and animal welfare.

On Saturday, 14th June, Animals in Marbella Sanctuary (AIM), a charity run by expats in Marbella, protested alongside members of PACMA.Partido Animalista Con el Medio AmbienteSpain’s leading animal-welfare political party gathers outside Marbella Bullring for a peaceful demonstration against bullfighting, and to protect other animals.

Elise Dunweber is the President of AIM Sanctuary. She said, “It’s a myth that this is just expatriates acting self-righteously. There are a lot of Spaniards out there who do not wish to see these atrocities take place in their country and stand with international communities speaking against bullfighting.”

Bullfighting remains a hot topic in Spain. This includes the debate over subsidies to breeding farms for fighting bulls. Subsidies are seen as subsidizing the practice.

The aim of the protest was to raise awareness and call for an end to bullfighting, an ´outdated and violent spectacle´, Ms. Dunweber added.

Over 52,000 people have signed a petition calling for the permanent ban of bullfighting. change.org, which demonstrates the ´growing opposition among Spaniards and the international community to this cruel practice.´
