Irish authorities are urging holidaymakers to be careful over ensuring nobody takes their personal belongings in potential ‘danger zones’.
The recommendation is to not keep a passport together with a credit card, tickets, and money.
The suggestion was that certain items could be stored in a secure and the rest carried only when necessary.
Mobile phones are also very popular items to steal.
The department warns of the dangers of public places such as train and bus station, bars and restaurants. It is important to keep an eye on your bags and valuables at all times.
It is also recommended that tourists avoid dark, unlit areas and arrange pickups and drops as close to their accommodation as possible.
DFA spokeswoman said: “Most parts of Spain have a low crime rate but you should be aware of the higher risks of pickpocketing or mugging in places like airports, bus and railway stations, tourist spots and major cities.”
In the event that you become a victim while enjoying the Spanish sun, please call the local police at 112. Don’t worry – all operators are English speakers.”
The DFA recommends: “Always get a copy when reporting a crime. This will be required for any insurance claims.”
