The Worrying Trend of Child Convictions

The highest number of convictions for sexual offences by minors has been recorded since the figures were first compiled in 2007.

Only Barcelona province and Badajoz have more convictions for sex crimes among children.

Alicante’s total last year was highest since 2019.

The increase in reported criminal activity is not clear. It could be due to an increase in the number of young sexual offenders.

In Alicante, the same upward trend can be seen among adults.

In 2024 there will be 257 reported sexual crimes, compared to 139 in 2007.

For children, it is the highest since 2017. There are 36 more sexual crimes in 2024 compared to 2023. The number of sexual crimes has also exceeded 200 for the second consecutive year.

According to the Central Registry of Convicted Persons (CRCP), 178 adults were convicted in the last year, the highest number since the INE began monitoring data.

In 2024, there were 63 prosecutions more than seven years earlier and 876 sentences were handed down by the courts.

Alicante ranks fifth in Spain for the number of adult sex crimes.
