Icy polar blast set to blanket Spain in wintery conditions ahead of next week’s Semana Santa celebrations – these are the affected areas

A BLASTING of polar air will sweep across Spain bringing with it a drastic drop in temperatures, widespread rain and strong winds, as well as snowfall, ahead of Semana Santa celebrations.

Spain, after a brief taste last week of early summer, when temperatures reached up to 25C in Bilbao is bracing themselves for the return to winter conditions, as a wave of cold air descends throughout Europe.

From Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop by 6–10C across much of the peninsula, bringing a sharp contrast to recent conditions.

It is likely that the northern regions of Spain, including the Pais Vasco will experience the coldest temperatures.

In Bilbao, highs on Thursday are forecast to reach just 13C, with overnight lows of around 7C – well below last week’s warm spell.

San Sebastian, which is nearby, will experience even cooler temperatures with daytime maximums of around 9C.

Burgos, for example, is expected to be around 7C most of the day.

La Rioja will see temperatures peaking at 5C, with some towns seeing highs as low as 1C.

As the cold front moves east, it will arrive in Cataluyna on Saturday and bring showers.

Barcelona’s temperatures are expected to be around 16C.

Semana Santa begins on Palm Sunday. The colder weather pattern will continue through the rest of northern Spain.

The daytime maximums are expected to be 8-9C in cities such as Burgos and Pamplona.

The snow level is expected to be lower than normal for this time of the year in the Pyrenees, and also the Cantabrian Mountains.

Snow could accumulate in the mid and higher elevations during the coldest parts of the day.

In the coming days, temperatures will drop, rain will be widespread, and winter conditions are likely to return in large areas of Spain.
