Numerous iconic singers and bands from the 1980s national and international pop scene will come together in Malaga for the Generación Tocata festival, a musical extravaganza to be held in the José María Martín Carpena sports complex in Malaga on Saturday 12 April. The lineup of performers includes several international bands that were at the forefront of the 1980s pop culture scene, along with stalwart supporters of Spain’s La Movida Madrileña, a counterculture movement that took place mainly in Madrid during the transition to democracy.
The festival that was supposed to take place in December but was delayed due to the Dana tragedy is now held in other Spanish cities, such as Bilbao, Badalona and Barcelona, where it will take place in June.
The Malaga concert will feature performances by Katrina & the Waves as well as Imagination Samantha Fox and The Gibson Brothers.
Top British performers
Katrina And The Waves burst onto the UK scene in 1985, with their international hit Walking on Sunshine. It was then followed by Do You Wanna Crying. Love Shine a Light, the band’s song that won them the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, was also a hit. The group was a huge success internationally, touring Europe and Canada after their debut album.
Samantha Fox, a former model and glamour girl who achieved international success with Touch Me, I Only Want To Be With You, and Hold On Tight, will also be joining them.
The evening will also feature the Gibson Brothers – a French disco group that achieved their biggest success in the late 1970s; Fancy – a German Europop singer known for international disco hit songs like Chinese Eyes; and the Boney M Experience – a tribute to the band’s greatest hits including Rasputin; Ma Baker; Rivers of Babylon; and Daddy Cool.
The festival will also feature two of Spain’s most popular performers from the 1980s: Baccara (the female duo) whose debut song, Yes Sir, i Can Boogie reached the top charts in many European countries, and Javier Oveda (the lead singer of Danza Invisible), the Torremolinos new wave band which spearheaded La Movida.
Other performers lined up for the event are La Guardia, Francesco Nápoli, Spagna, Azul y Negro, Fiordaliso, Javier Andreu de la Frontera, and Kaoma.
