Ibiza, Airbnb and CSN sign an ‘historical’ agreement on tourist flats amid rising tensions

IBIZA council and Airbnb have signed a ‘historic’ agreement to remove illegal tourist accommodation from the platform.

The ‘pioneering’ plan will remove ‘flagrantly’ illegal properties from the website, including caravans, tents, yurts and boats.

The agreement means properties will be taken down ‘without discussion or appeal’ in order to prevent costly legal delays.

Airbnb users who break the law may also be blocked.

There are currently 100 cases open in Ibiza. This number is expected to increase by over 200 when new measures are introduced.

Jaime Rodriguez de Santiago and Vicent Mar, the Ibiza council leader who is also the Spanish Airbnb director have both signed this agreement.

The Ibiza Tourism Board, the Ibiza and Formentera Hotelier Federation and the Ibiza Tourist Accommodation Association have all been included in the discussions.

Mari stated that Airbnb has chosen Ibiza as the place to start their fight against tourist flats.

The island is small, but it’s a major player in the tourism industry of Spain.”

Meanwhile Santiago has expressed his wish that Ibiza be the ‘first of many’ councils to collaborate with Airbnb.

He said, “This is just the beginning of a long-lasting relationship.”
