Horror on the Costa Blanca: Father kills his three-year-old daughter before taking own life in suspected ‘vicarious violence’ case

A SUN-DRENCHED city on the Costa Blanca is in mourning this weekend after a three-year-old girl was killed by her own father in a suspected act of so-called ‘vicarious violence’.

The 40-year old man who has not been named is believed to be the one who murdered his 2-year-old daughter in Torrevieja before killing himself.

The child’s 36-year-old mother alerted Guardia Civil after several hours of being unable reach her former partner.

She told the police that although the couple was divorced since two years, the father had threatened to harm their child in the past if she didn’t end a relationship with another man.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, officers discovered two bodies hanging from a garage next to the father’s home.

Mother is in hospital now after having suffered an anxiety attack.

Torrevieja, Costa Blanca: The incident that shocked the world took place on Saturday.

An investigation into the killing is being carried out by the Women and Minors unit of the Guardia Civil’s judicial police in Alicante, with early indications that the murder-suicide was a case of ‘vicarious violence’.

This term is used to describe a type of gender-based abuse in which a perpetrator (usually a former partner or male partner) harms a woman intentionally by targeting the people she loves such as her children, family, friends, or pets.

According to the police, there were no reports of domestic violence and the family had not been registered in Spain’s VioGen system against domestic violence.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon said: “This horrible event shocks us all as a community and reminds us that we must continue to work together to protect our children and eliminate any form of violence in the home.”
