Early Summer Temperatures Recorded

In recent years, temperatures in the north of Spain have been warmer than usual.

Galicia, La Rioja and Asturias were the worst affected regions.

It is suggested that people who live in areas which are prone to heatwaves will be more inclined to avoid the sun and use safety precautions.

Spain, like other Western European countries, has experienced extreme heat over the past few weeks with temperatures frequently exceeding 40C.

According to the Carlos III Health Institute, the number of people who died from heat-related causes in the period between May 16 and 13 July is 1,180 compared with only 114 for the same time in 2024.

The first week of July saw a significant increase in deaths.

The data shows an event ‘of exceptional intensity, characterised by an unprecedented increase in average temperatures and a significant increase in mortality attributable to heatwaves’, the Environment Ministry said.

In this period, there have been 76 red alerts, compared to zero a year before.

2191 deaths last summer in Spain were linked to heat.
