Guaro’s popular Noches de la Luna Mora Festival will be held on Saturday and Friday, 12 September. This event celebrates the region’s rich multi-cultural heritage. It transports visitors and locals back to a time of coexistence between Arab, Jewish and Christian culture, which left an indelible impression on the history and architecture of the area.
Like many of the white villages of Andalucía, Guaro keeps its history very much alive with this annual festival of the Moorish moon, when the entire village is decked out in medieval décor and illuminated by over 25,000 candles.
The festivities, now in their 27th year of celebration, begin at 5pm on Friday with the opening of the Moorish style zoco. This is followed by the lighting of the official candles. The medieval market, which is a key part of the celebrations, allows local artisans to showcase their traditional skills, including jewellery, textiles, pottery, and ceramics.
The events programme includes, among others, concerts, workshops and parades featuring oriental dances. There are food stalls that offer dishes that represent the fusion of cultures from the region.
The festival, held in the historical centre of the town, and in the Luna Mora Auditorium, is free. Except for the main concert, which will be presented by Chambao on Saturday 13th at 11pm.
Chambao has been praised for their unique blend of flamenco and electronic music. Tickets cost 10 euros.
