Grant Barr, 37, a New Yorker banker who disappeared in Estepona on January 28 has been found dead. His family confirmed this.

The shocking revelation brings to an end a case that has gripped Costa del Sol since over two months. Barr’s body, washed up along a beach in March. Unbelievably, however, his family did not receive the news until April 4, which is a bit of a mystery. ‘We don’t understand the delay,’ his brother James complains, who was in Spain with relatives at the time. Barr’s remains have been returned to his family in the US.

Barr was looking for some solace following a painful breakup when he went to Spain on a sailing trip. Michael Barr, his father, had previously highlighted Grant’s fragile mental state. He said Grant was paranoid and thought his family were in danger. The discovery of his belongings, including his passport, at a nearby port raised early concerns.

Hope faded despite extensive searches and social media campaigns asking for local tips. James thanked the National Police of Spain for their support but criticised their breakdown in communication. ‘My brother and mother were there when the body was found. He said, “No one told us.”

The family wants to know where and how Barr’s body was found. ‘He was doing what he loved,’ James said, while mourning the loss of a man who sought freedom on the open water.
