Mijas Mayor Ana Mata recently announced that Town Hall had officially taken over from construction companies the completed Grand Park. The 270,000 square metre green space is set to be the largest urban park in the Costa del Sol.
This is a great achievement, since it marks the end of construction. Mayor Mata said that the project was modified to make it more functional and to meet everyone’s expectations.
The Grand Park in El Ahogadero features 2,900 trees, a new selection of trees, and shrubs that reduce water usage from 1,350 cubic meters per month to only 350. The park has basketball and football courts in the south, a dog-park, an amphitheatre with 1,500 seats for cultural and celebratory events, five playgrounds for children, a skate-park, a splash-park, and different fitness stations. The park is also popular with families because of its boating lake.
Maintenance contracts for the park, valued at €3.29 million annually for three years, have been divided into three lots: landscaping (€2.35 million), security (€392,000), and facility maintenance building and contract (€544,000). The Town Hall is hoping to offset costs through leasing service concessions such as bicycle rental and chiringuito bar. Residents will have the opportunity to visit the park after the contracts are awarded and provide feedback. The date for this event is anticipated to be early September. However, no schedule has been set.

Stretching from the cemetery grounds to the Cerros del Águila urbanisation and as far as Venta de la Morena, the park was built with a budget of €26.6 million. In September, a second phase will include two bridges that span the Fuengirola River, improving pedestrian access.
