Due to the rise in temperatures this week in southern Spain, snow will only be expected in mountains higher than 3,000 metres on February 10 and 2,900 meters on Wednesday.
Together with the rains, and waterlogged land following Storm Leonardo, this raises the fear of further flooding. Snow and ice are melting rapidly on the Sierra Nevada ski slopes.
Samuel Biener explains, as a geologist, expert in natural risks management, at the Meteored platform (tiempo.com), that fronts are expected to remain in Granada Province until Saturday. This will leave rainfall. Meteorologist Samuel Biener says they won’t rain as much as last week but still expect more than 100mm in the areas around Granada City, Sierra Nevada and Loja.
He explains that even with less rain there is a danger of rivers flooding.
Biener explains that this week, a long and narrow band of warm and moist air is moving through southern Spain.
We can expect flooding at the base of the mountain if there is rain and strong winds below 2,900-3,001 metres.
The water from the melting snow flows down in runoff and ends up in the rivers, including the Genil and its tributaries Monachil, Dílar and Darro on the northern slope and Guadalfeo, Poqueira, Trevélez, Cádiar and the Almerian Adra and Andarax, on the southern slope.
Subtropical air
The Meteored expert says that “on Friday, we will have an active front, with a lower snow level – between 1,100 and 1,400 metres according to Aemet’s forecast. Some of the snow which melts will also be recovered. But in the coming days, we need to be alert due to new precipitation, and thawing, on a terrain already saturated.”
Javier Herrero, hydrology and snow expert at the University of Granada and researcher, said that the snow accumulated last week in the Sierra Nevada reached 150 cubic meters in volume. This is more than the Rules reservoir and Colomera reservoir combined, and they were filled to capacity.
In fact, according to his data – which he shares on X through his profile @NevadaNieve – last week the melting resulted in 15,000 million litres in a single day, which went to the Quéntar and Canales reservoirs and the basins of the Monachil and Dílar rivers. The reservoirs are expected to receive more water this week.
