Google will soon add Gemini support to Android Auto. Drivers in vehicles that are compatible with Android Auto can now access voice-based AI for better road assistance.
The tech giant says the update will allow users to control apps, plan journeys, summarise messages, and even practise work presentations without touching a screen – just by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk.”
Gemini AI Android Auto
Google claims that the new AI will improve the Android Auto experience, allowing for more natural conversations as well as deeper integration of apps such Gmail and Google Maps.
‘Gemini Live is a conversational experience with Gemini that is a perfect fit in the car. Just say ‘Hey Google, let’s talk’ to brainstorm, explore and learn something new with Gemini,’ says a Google blogpost.
Gemini allows drivers to access directions, email, or a podcast without touching their hands. One example given is using Gemini to get a quick synopsis of a book on your way to a book club meetup – a bit of a cheat if you ask me!
What can Google Gemini be used for in the car?
According to Patrick Brady (Vice President of Android for Cars), Gemini will be available in two major ways on Android Auto. TechCrunch. Included are:
- Conversational Help: Users speak more naturally and intuitively, rather than using specific commands.
- Support integrated: Using apps like Gmail, you can retrieve older emails or summarise the new ones.
‘Gemini will upgrade that experience by understanding what you want while you’re driving, through natural conversations,’ Google confirms.
The company says the AI can also find tailored pit stops, such as locating a charging station near a park so you can take a walk while your car powers up – now that is handy.
Gemini now available on Android devices
Gemini is coming to Android Auto. Google has confirmed that its generative artificial intelligence will be available across WearOS smartwatches and Google TV as well as the upcoming Android XR (android augmented reality) headsets developed in collaboration with Samsung.
- It can be used to set up reminders and pull up emails while working out.
- It can also provide kids with solar system facts or family-friendly content.
- In XR you can create immersive tours with videos, maps and maps.
When will Gemini cars be launched?
The Gemini AI experience will launch ‘in the coming months’ for all cars that support Android Auto, followed by vehicles with Google built-in systems. Google claims that more than 50 models of cars have Google built-in features and that over 250 millions vehicles worldwide support Android Auto.
This latest move forms part of Google‘s broader goal to create a truly unified AI assistant across its entire Android ecosystem.
