Antonio Banderas returns to Malaga theatreland with Godspell

Godspell brings Antonio Banderas back to Malaga’s theatreland

Antonio Banderas, who directed the sold-out triumphant debut of Godspell in 2022, will now direct a colorful revival at Teatro del Soho CaixaBank Malaga. The show is set to begin on 30 October.

This remake of the 1970s Broadway hit, which is based on John-Michael Tebelak’s novel and features music and lyrics from Stephen Schwartz will captivate audiences during its Christmas run in a similar way to Banderas’ celebrated Gypsy production.

Godspell follows a group in a busy metropolis. The play is inspired by St. Matthew’s Gospel. A young group’s play, set in an abandoned theater warehouse, evolves into a transformational journey. The characters are led to explore New Testament parables through encounters with Jesus. They then embrace themes such as tolerance, compassion and community, while reflecting on shared values, like sustainability, freedom and collective responsibility.

The show features 14 actors, a live orchestra, and 16 musical numbers including “Prepare Ye the Way,” Day by Day,” and Beautiful City.

Tickets, starting at €25, are on sale now. The eagerly-awaited Godspell revival, directed by Malaga’s Antonio Banderas will be another huge success.
