A HORSE REHABILITATION CENTRE located in Cadiz is currently hosting a young horse who desperately needs assistance. The Asociación Equiscire Centre, located in the Andalucian town of Vejer de la Frontera, is currently hosting a GoFundMe fundraiser To help a young pony with an injured leg.
A young filly left in an abandoned field fights for her life
Molly Grace, the owner of the Asociación Equiscire Centre, tells the story of a young filly that had been left abandoned to fend for herself in a field in Chiclana de la Frontera around 3 months ago, for which the rescue centre received a call. Grace explained that they raised money for her transfer to the centre, and from then on focused on gaining weight and earning trust. The young filly had been rescued when she was so thin, her ribs could be seen. “We called her Shoshana. It means Lily and beauty through resilience.”
They discovered at the centre that Shoshana had actually been a Spanish purebred horse who was abandoned because she was too small. It did not make any sense to us because they are worth a lot even though they’re small.
Shoshana had swelling on the rear of her leg when she arrived, but was not lame. This allowed the rescuers prioritise Shoshana’s weight gain. The swelling continued to increase, so the rescuers called in a vet. He discovered that Shoshana was not only suffering from a broken ligament but also had osteochondritis, a painful joint degeneration disease.

The ligaments have been damaged in the x-ray of Shoshana’s leg. The tissue is a little fragment of bone.
Although the center can provide treatment, it is not financially feasible.
Grace continues, “Fortunately, the condition can be treated.” Grace continues: “However the risk is she may have sepsis inside the joint. So before surgery can even consider, she will need to undergo an MRI and joint flush, as well as antibiotic treatment.” According to Grace, these procedures alone amount to €750. “We have been quoted by the hospital approximately €3,200 to treat her and do the surgery. The vet has highlighted that the OCD is severe, as is the ligament injury and for that reason the prognosis is ‘reserved.'” Grace affirms that for the small and locally-owned rescue, the amount is enormous … but they refuse to give up on Shoshana.
Grace explained that the costs were too high for the rescue, and they had other mouths to satisfy. “So we created a GoFundMe account to help raise money.” The centre has currently raised about one third of its €3,200 goal, and desperately needs help from kind strangers and animal lovers to help Shoshana, the resilient young horse who has survived despite all the odds being against her.
Shoshana is a gentle and trusting animal despite her difficulties
Shoshana, despite everything she has been through, is still gentle, full of trust, and has a big heart. She wants to continue. The fundraiser reads: “She only needs the chance.” It doesn’t really matter to us if she will ever be able to ride again. We want Shoshana’s life to be filled with comfort, dignity and pain-free.
She has survived abandonment. She has also survived starvation. She just needs some help to get through.

Shoshana needs your help!

The Asociación Equiscire Centre, helping recover and rehome abandoned horses
The Asociación Equiscire Centre has been in operation since 2021. The centre was initially set up to educate people about horse care, nutrition and welfare. However, as the number of abandoned and neglected horses increased, it became necessary to take them in and help them recover. Molly Grace is a passionate animal lover who spends a lot of time at the centre caring for these amazing creatures.
