Fuengirola has made a decisive move to preserve its rich historical identity with a €240,000 investment plan.
The plan aims to restore and maintain the key art and monuments that make up the colourful heritage of the city, such as fountains, murals and historic cannons.
The first project in the plan focuses the Mare Nostrum water fountain on the Mercacentro circular. The seagull statue damaged by vandalism is being replaced in the autumn of this year, just after Feria del Rosario. The restoration is part of a €45,788, four-year contract dedicated to maintaining the town’s public fountains and sculptures.
The Open-Air Museum in Fuengirola will be undergoing a major restoration of two murals created by Pedro Escalona & Enrique Brinkmann. The murals, which have deteriorated a great deal, will be revitalised with a €111,000 grant from the Municipio Turístico Programme with all the work contracted out.
The city’s historical cannons, on top of Castillo Sohail, the Paseo Marítimo, and the Museum, are also scheduled for a makeover. An €88,000 contract, which will last 18 months, will address their long-standing deterioration.
