Fuengirola firefighters honored for heroic Valencia mission

Fuengirola has been honoured with the Gold Medal for bravery by the Fire Service in recognition of its finest. The mayor of Fuengirola has hailed them as heroes for their selfless actions in the disaster area.

Last autumn, the firefighters deployed to the region worked tirelessly to save those in danger and to prevent further destruction. ‘A moment of immense pride’

Ana Mula, the mayor of Fuengirola, recalls the moment when she received the phone call from the chief firefighter asking permission to send a team to Valencia.

‘It’s been over four months, but I still remember it clearly,’ she said. ‘We were glued to our screens, watching in shock as the disaster unfolded. We were shocked when we saw the firefighters. ground, or saw a fire truck with ‘Fuengirola’ emblazoned on the side, we felt nothing but pride.’

Praising their courage, she added: ‘Commitment and service define these men. These words are not engraved on the medals of these men, but they have been engraved in their hearts.

The bravery of the names

Among those honoured were fire chief José Julián Bueno García, along with senior officers Joaquín Higueras Caballero, Cristóbal Pérez Cortés, Juan Antonio Vega Palomo, and David González Ortiz. Also recognised for their service were firefighters Rubén Nieto Campos, Manuel Moncada García, José Antonio Polaino Martínez, Miguel Ángel del Cid Soler, Miguel Ángel Pajuelo Mangas, Juan Merino Fontana, Pablo Vilanova Nieto, and Juan Martínez de Juan.

The firefighters who remained at Fuengirola were also recognized for their dedication to the city, which ensured that the emergency response did not suffer while their colleagues were away. The town paid tribute, too, to two retiring firefighters, Andrés Ramírez and Antonio Martín, for their years of dedication.
