The demand for real estate in Spain’s ski resorts, which are not as well-known as the beach, is steadily increasing.
Buyers are increasingly interested in mountain homes, from luxury chalets in Pyrenees, to high-altitude properties in Sierra Nevada. These homes offer year-round appeal, winter sports, and long-term value.
A recent buyer told The Olive Press that having a ski property transformed the way he and family used their closest resort in the Sierra Nevada.
Ben Bateman, who owns a property conveniently located in the center of the resort behind the Kenia Hotel explains, “Having a place to leave your stuff, and return at any time, makes it a home away.”
Bateman 47, owner of the long-standing Holmes Estate Agency in Sotogrande, recalled his excitement when he visited the ski house where he grew up.

“Spending a full day traveling by bus, train, and car just to get to the mountains – then skiing feverishly to make the most of it. The father of 5 says, “It was exhausting at the end.”
He realized the value of owning his own ski lodge, which he could use as he pleases every weekend. Of course, location matters. He says, “It’s only three minutes walk to the cable car and an easy stroll to excellent bars and restaurant, all with incredible views.”

Baqueira-Beret

Baqueira-Beret in the Catalan Pyrenees is at the top of the market.
Widely regarded as Spain’s most exclusive ski resort – helped by regular visits from the Spanish royal family – it attracts affluent buyers from Madrid, Barcelona and the Basque Country.
Limited supply helps to support prices. Demand is mainly for chalets of high quality and apartments in good locations.
Formigal & Cerler

Formigal and Cerler are popular options for second-home and family owners in the Aragon Pyrenees.
Both resorts, which are renowned for their stunning landscapes and expansive ski areas, appeal to buyers who want a property that they can enjoy personally but also have a good rental potential.
La Molina & Masella

La Molina and Masella are located in the Cerdanya Valley of Girona, a region that is very accessible.
They are popular with frequent weekend visitors due to their good road and rail connections to Barcelona.
Hiking and cycling during the summer months has also helped maintain interest.
Navacerrada & Valdesqui

Navacerrada, Valdesqui and the Sierra de Guadarrama are also close to Madrid. They continue to be popular with buyers from Madrid looking for a quick getaway.
The properties are usually traditional mountain homes, or apartments in nearby towns like Ceredilla. These tend to be more convenient than resort living.

Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada is Spain’s highest ski resort, and it’s also one of the most distinctive.
It is snow-sure until late April, and it’s only two hours away from Malaga. This offers a unique combination of winter skiing with east access to coast.
Buyers are drawn to the lifestyle contrast – beaches in the summer, mountains in the winter.
