You don’t need to pay for your renewal of driving license if you are 70 years old or older, and you live in Spain.
Yes, really.
The DGT (that’s Spain’s traffic authority) has officially scrapped the €24.58 renewal fee for drivers aged 70 and over. The goal is to ease the lives of older drivers who may be on a limited budget or depend on their vehicle for everyday use. It’s not a huge sum, sure—but for many people, it’s one less expense to worry about.
In Spain, the renewal of a license is free for drivers over 70 years old.
Once you reach 70, the fee is automatically removed. There’s no special form to fill out or request to make—you just don’t get charged.
The process isn’t entirely paperless. The process isn’t completely paperless.
- Keeping your documents up-to-date
- Please provide a recent photograph
- And—most importantly—passing a medical check to show you’re still fit to drive
This medical exam is more important if there are any health concerns or if the driver is over 65. DGT wants to ensure that everyone can drive safely on the road, regardless of their age.
You can do the renewal either online or in person at your local traffic office—whatever works best for you.
If you’re under 70? If you’re under 70, the fee is still payable.
What are the catches?
There are a few. Health is the obvious. If you fail the medical exam—or forget to bring in the certificate—you won’t be able to renew, whether you’re 70 or 90.
Missing paperwork is no different. The process can be delayed if your photo is outdated or your personal information doesn’t match. Double-check everything you enter before starting.
DGT also clarified that just because renewals are free, it doesn’t mean the DGT is lowering its standards. Safety is their first priority, and they will not renew a licence if the person they believe to be unfit for driving. You can choose to be free or not.
Spain’s free renewal of driving licenses for seniors
It’s a part of a larger push to support older motorists without putting anyone in danger. A lot of people over 70 still drive regularly—especially in smaller towns or rural areas where buses and trains aren’t always an option.
This move helps them stay mobile, independent and connected—without skipping out on the checks that keep everyone safe.
It might be worth checking when the license expires if you, or someone you are close to, is of that age. No fee, less stress—and still fully legal on the road.
