MALLORCA may follow Ibiza and implement a cap on the number of rental cars or air passengers arriving ahead of summer.
The local council are reportedly ‘rigorously’ analysing measures to curb the island’s growing tourism problems.
In the coming week, the Balearic Parliament is expected to review the proposals.
The announcement comes after Balearic Vice President Antoni Cost confirmed that the regional administration had requested to limit the number of flights landing on the islands in this summer.

He said, “We’re at our limit. It is not wise to increase airport capacity during high season. We have to put sustainability ahead of short-term gain.”
They asked the central government, Aena (the national airport operator) and also advocated for shared control over the airports to allow them more say on how many flights arrive on the island.
The increase is a result of the 11,240 takeoffs/landings in the Balearic Islands recorded during the Easter week, a 46% jump from 2024.
According to Costa, such growth is ‘unsustainable’ as Mallorca is already limiting the amount of overnight accommodation on the island.
This could result in an increase of hotel prices along with an increase of tourist taxes, and possibly a limit on car rental.
Mallorca residents can now only own one car with a foreign number plate. The Balearic Government has approved measures that will reduce the number of rental cars, caravans and other vehicles entering Ibiza.
These measures are intended to quell the anti-tourism protests, while also addressing social and environmental concerns.

Ibiza Council released a statement that said: “This Summer, Ibiza will take another step in its commitment towards sustainability and coexistence of the tourism sector with residents, and will implement for the first-time a regulation which will control the influx vehicles.
“The Island Council approved the maximum quota for 20,168 cars that, along with those having tax residency on Ibiza island, will be permitted to circulate in the island from June 1 until September 30.
“Of those, 16,000 are rental cars, and 4,108 are for tourists who want their cars to be dropped off in Ibiza at the ports from Barcelona, Denia Valencia or Palma.”
The Island Council of Ibiza launched the platform ibizacircular.es, where you can reserve your quota for a daily fee of one euro.
