Filipe Luís in line for dream job – Can he beat Ancelotti? CSN News

Former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luís is emerging as a serious candidate for one of the most prestigious jobs in football: Brazil national team.

The 39 year old quickly established himself as a manager, leading Flamengo in a 24-game win streak. Since taking over the role of head coach in September, he has won three trophies.

Filipe Luís has already won the Brazil Cup, the Brazil Supercup, and the Carioca Championship with the Rio de Janeiro-based club.

Filipe Luís, the future manager of Brazil?

Filipe Luís ended his football career with Flamengo and then became coach for the U17 team of the club. He moved to the U20 squad, and then became manager of the senior team in September 2024.

Experts now claim that Luis has been considered for the Brazil National Team job. Now led by Dorival Júnior, Brazil is going through tough times. The Seleção just suffered a 1-4 defeat against their historic rivals Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Brazil currently ranks fourth in South American qualification, behind Argentina. Uruguay and Ecuador.

The World Cup is not in danger, but the team’s poor performance has left both fans and officials disappointed, which has led them to start looking for a replacement head coach.

Other competitors

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), however, is still the top target for Carlo Ancelotti. However, convincing the Italian to leave Real Madrid may prove challenging. Brazil can also look at Jorge Jesus (70), the Portuguese coach currently leading Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

At 39, Filipe Luís is a younger, more accessible option. Tim Vickery, a football analyst, describes him as a “man of great intellect” who is making a good start in his coaching career. Luis’s readiness for this high-pressure position is still in question, but the chance of leading Brazil to their first World Cup win since 2002 might be too tempting to pass up.

Filipe Luís as a player

Born in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil, Filipe Luís moved to Europe in 2004 when he signed with Ajax. He was later loaned to Real Madrid B and Deportivo La Coruña before joining Atlético Madrid in 2010. Except for one season (2014–2015) at Chelsea, Luís played for Simeone’s team until 2019, winning six trophies and reaching two Champions League finals.

Flamengo was his club of choice in his later years. He earned 44 caps with Brazil and scored two goals.
