Federico García Lorca's soul laid bare to the pulse of flamenco and jazz in Torremolinos

Lorca: Del Flamenco al Jazz, a show inspired by the work of one of Spain’s most celebrated poets, will be presented at Torremolinos’ Palacio de Congresos on Friday 7th November.

The show, which has visited various towns in Andalucía, focuses on the work and life of Federico García Lorca, and, in particular, his relationship with the Madrid sculptor, Emilio Aladrén. The Granada poet engaged in a two-year open relationship with Aladrén, although the couple separated in 1927 and Lorca suffered severe depression. Lorca traveled to New York in order to get over his sadness. His most famous work, Poeta en Nueva York, was inspired by this trip.

The show, performed by actor Manuel Navarro, saxophonist Aarón González and guitarist Adrán Cobo, focuses on Lorca’s emotions and how the relationship with Aladrén, and the eventual separation, affected his work at that time.

Lorca’s love for flamenco and Gypsy culture, as well as his experience with jazz in New York are also explored. Lorca witnessed the marginalisation suffered by ethnic minorities and the segregation of blacks in Harlem, which he compared to the treatment that Gypsies received in Andalucía.

The Torremolinos performance, which begins at 8.30pm on the same day, will raise money for three local charities who work to make children and young people with disabilities visible.

Tickets cost 10 euros.
