Beyond laundry: Surprising fabric softener cleaning tricks

Fabric softener: More than just a laundry product?

Fabric softener doesn’t have to be restricted to the washing machines. It can also help you clean around the house.

The mild cleaning agents, fresh scent and anti-static properties make this product useful for a lot more than just soft clothing.

Use diluted fabric softener for cleaning walls and skirting board. It is effective in removing dust, and it prevents the dust from settling so quickly. Mix a little bit with warm tap water and use a dampened sponge to wipe surfaces.

The floors also benefit. Add a tiny amount to the mop water for a nice shine on tile or laminate. Be careful, as too much can make surfaces slippery.

Glass shower doors collect soap scum fast. A cloth dipped in fabric softener will help clean and reduce buildup. This is not for mirrors or glass.

In the kitchen it is great for stainless-steel. Use a soft, clean cloth to rub a little on your appliances. This will reduce smudges while adding a subtle sheen.

You can also use it to freshen fabrics such as curtains, mattresses and carpets. Spray a mixture of water and softener lightly to reduce static electricity and odors.

You can use the same spray on your car’s interior, or to wipe down electronic screens and artificial plants. Remember to use only a little and wipe it dry afterwards.
