‘Extreme’ sun-risk warning for tourists heading to the Canary Islands

HOLIDAYMAKERS visiting the Canary Islands in the coming days should take precautions due to ‘extreme’ UV-levels, according to the Spanish Ministry of Health.

Aemet warned that UV-levels will rise this weekend. This is a warning that would normally be issued during summer.

UV-levels will be in the ‘very high’ category with a rating from 9, to 10 in some places, according to Aemet.

As of Monday, UV-levels would even reach a rating of 11, which is ‘extremely high’.

If the rating is 8, you should take special precautions to protect yourself against sunrays.

Avoid going outdoors in the late afternoon as UV-levels will be at their highest.

Wear sunglasses, appropriate clothing, a wide brimmed hat, and suncream to exposed areas.

Aemet says that the UV levels on Saturday 10 May will be 9 in La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera, while Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura will be 10.

El Hierro y La Gomera will have a level increase of 10 on Sunday 11th May.

But on Monday, May 12 La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife will experience UV levels of 10 and Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will have ‘extreme’ UV levels.

UV radiation can cause DNA damages, sunburns, eye problems, premature aging, and an increase in certain cancers.
