Alicante’s Provincial Court has sentenced former Valencian politician and doctor Julio de España to one year and six months in prison after finding he sexually assaulted a patient during an examination in a private clinic.
The court also ordered him to pay the woman €12,000 in compensation and banned him from approaching or contacting her for three years.
De España, who once served as president of Les Corts and of Alicante provincial council, was found to have gone beyond what the judges considered proper medical practice during a rectal examination carried out in 2023.
The ruling can still be appealed to the regional high court, the TSJCV.
What the court found
According to the sentence, the panel held that the specialist in digestive medicine sexually assaulted the patient by making inappropriate contact during the consultation. The court did not accept the defence argument that the examination was fully justified on medical grounds.
The case centres on events at a private clinic in Alicante. The court’s decision is one of the most serious legal findings yet involving the former senior PP figure, who was a prominent name in Valencian politics for years.
The judges did not uphold other parts of the complaint and the sentence remains subject to appeal.
