English songwriter Ed Sheeran to feature on FC Barcelona shirt for El Clasico derby

HIS albums were emblazoned on the shirt of his beloved Ipswich Town for four seasons – but now Ed Sheeran’s latest musical offering will be displayed on a limited-edition kit for one of Europe’s top clubs.

PlayThe song, which was released by the English singer last month, is set to appear on the fronts of shirts worn by Lamine and his team when FC Barcelona takes on arch-rivals Real Madrid two weeks from now.

The partnership is part of Catalan giant Spotify’s sponsorship agreement.

Sheeran joins other artists such as Coldplay, Drake and Travis Scott in being the first British male solo singer to be featured on the club jersey.

“Seeing my new album Play “I can’t believe I am wearing the Barca shirt,” said the 34-year old.

“I love football and I’ve been a fan my entire life. So, bringing my music on such a legendary stage to share it with fans all over the world is incredibly important to me.”

Two weeks from now, the likes of Robert Lewandowski could be wearing this kit. FC Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski praised the move. “Ed’s albums have been part our dressing room playlist for many years, so seeing Ed’s new album on our shirt for El Clasico was really special.”

Some 1,899 ‘match-quality’ shirts will be made with the logo, 22 of which will be signed by players.

Sheeran will also pen his autograph on 11 of the shirts – while his logo will also appear on other club merchandise, including T-shirts and scarves.

Marc Hazan said, Spotify’s vice president of partnerships and marketing.

“Ed’s love of football and his position as one the world’s most famous artists made Play on the Barca t-shirt a natural decision.”

Sheeran has over 92 million monthly listeners on Spotify – the third most for any artist – and has sold 200 million records worldwide.
