EasyJet cabin staff began a 3-day strike today, resulting in the cancellation of dozens of flights across Spain.
The walkout was joined by over 650 members of the USO union, who wanted to draw attention to the disparity between salaries for Spanish cabin crew and other European staff.
The strike has impacted EasyJet’s four Spanish bases – Barcelona (143 workers), Alicante (106), Malaga (127) and Palma de Mallorca (281) – and will last until Friday.
Malaga has cancelled flights from Malaga to Geneva, Manchester, Zurich and Basel. In Barcelona, Basel, London and Manchester were also removed.
Nine flights have been cancelled at Palma de Mallorca airport, further causing chaos following yesterday’s collapse of a section of the roof.
According to the USO, the basic salary of Spanish cabin crew at EasyJet is €14,067, significantly lower than the €18,214 staff are paid in Portugal, €19,086 in Italy, or €27,147 in the Netherlands.
USO Malaga President, Miguel Galan told the media: “The situation has been made worse by the fact that EasyJet bases are located in four of Spain’s most expensive cities for renting or buying housing. Not to mention the severe real estate crisis with its ever-rising prices and lack of rental supply.”
Striking cabin staff are demanding their pay to be equal to that of colleagues in Portugal and Italy.
Tourists affected by strikes are entitled to compensation.
