The Costa del Sol authorities have launched a campaign to combat drunk driving at Easter.
Officers from the Guardia Civil’s Traffic division have been clear about their intention to set up checkpoints ‘on all roads at any time of day’. Drivers are also advised to be alert to the possibility of increased traffic during the holiday season.
Spanish law sets a stricter limit on alcohol than UK law, which has a limit of 0.8 grams/liter (or 0.35 milligrams) when blowing into a breathalyzer. The Spanish law allows 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre for a blood test. This is equal to 0.25 milligrams/litre.
Surpassing these levels can result in fines ranging from €500 to €1,000, as well as the deduction of up to six points from a driving licence.
What should you say if Spanish law enforcement stops you?
- Switch off the engine.
- Follow the officer’s instructions with calmness and respect.
- Drivers can request another breathalyzer test if they receive a positive result. There must be a 10-minute gap between tests.
The DGT (Spanish traffic regulator) stresses that the best approach to driving safely is to completely avoid alcohol. If alcohol is consumed by travellers, they are advised to arrange alternative transportation. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect driving ability and have severe legal consequences. The only safe limit is 0.
