Dean Huijsen’s debut as a Bournemouth defender at the age of 19 was a moment to remember in Spain vs. the Netherlands.
The lanky centre-back, born in Amsterdam in 2005, entered the game in the 41st minute after Pau Cubarsí’s injury, replacing the Barcelona youngster as the only defensive option on coach Luis de la Fuente’s bench.
Huijsen was greeted with a cold reception by the De Kuip supporters, who booed his choice of Spain over his homeland Netherlands. Huijsen still managed to deliver an impressive performance despite the boos.
Dean Huijsen, who was five years old when he moved to Marbella, honed in on his skills before choosing the Spanish national team. The jeers started as soon as he entered the field and continued with each touch of the football, but the 6-foot-5-inch defender was unfazed. He was a whirlwind of speed and tenacity, especially in one-on-1 duels. His offensive contributions were also impressive.
‘It’s a dream to debut,’ Huijsen said post-match in a thick Andalusian accent. ‘I’m thrilled and proud to play for this team and my country. The crowd was booing as I came on, but De la Fuente told me, ‘Don’t think about it.’ I said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m from Málaga, so nothing scares me.” He added, ‘That’s football. I do my best to warm up and step onto the field. I hope Pau recovers soon.’
