Driving in Spain This Autumn: Rain, Schools and Safety

Driving in Spain: Schools, Rain and Safety

The weather changes as September approaches its end. As September draws to a close, the weather begins to change. For drivers in Spain — especially those hiring a car and unfamiliar with local conditions — autumn is a time to slow down, stay alert, and pay extra attention around schools.

Prepare your car for Autumn

Rain affects both Visibility and gripYour car’s condition is important.

  • Windscreens and WipersMake sure that your windscreen inside and outside is cleaned. Replace worn out wiper blades, and make sure to keep the washer fluid full. Glass that is dirty or streaked can cause glare at dawn and dusk.
  • TyresThe tread depth must be minimum 1.6 mm It is illegal, but it’s safer to drive in the rain. The risk of aquaplaning increases with poor tyres. Check for uneven wear, and make sure you maintain the right pressure.
  • Lights: Ensure all front, rear, and indicator lights are working — they are vital in poor weather.

On the road

  • Slow downIn wet conditions, stopping distances will increase dramatically. Even with the most advanced safety systems, the laws of physics still prevail.
  • Avoid sudden movementsThe risk of skidding increases when braking, accelerating or making sharp turns on a wet surface.
  • Be on the lookout for puddlesAquaplaning can be caused by large pools of water. If you can, steer gently around them — but Never swerve suddenly. Avoid splashing pedestrians in the vicinity of schools.

Near schools

Autumn is also marked by darker mornings or afternoons. This is often accompanied by rain. This creates a dangerous combination around schools: children wearing dark clothing, reduced visibility and increased traffic. In these zones

  • Respect reduced speed limits 20–30 km/h).
  • Please give way to crossing pedestrians and school buses.
  • Keep in mind that the local police at the gates has priority over all other signals.
  • Children may run suddenly, and they can be hidden by hoods, umbrellas or backpacks.

A simple message

It doesn’t matter if you are a local or a tourist driving a rental car. Slow down in the autumn. Spain’s roads are safe when drivers adapt to conditions — and around schools, vigilance protects the most vulnerable.
