Donkey Dreamland in La Cala de Mijas will celebrate its fifth anniversary on August 1, 2025.
Amaya Isert was inspired to create the sanctuary after she saw native donkeys tightly tethered in Mijas, waiting for tourists. Amaya was an expert in donkey care, having volunteered in Antequera at the Refugio del Burro.
She was determined to make a change and launched a campaign for the Mijas donkeys to be freed. The sanctuary would also provide a safe haven for any abandoned or mistreated animals in the area. Amaya purchased land at a fair price for the sanctuary, because its steep slope wasn’t suitable for horses but was perfect for donkeys.
Donkey Dreamland is opening its doors on August 2020. It will care for, and rehabilitate, these beloved native animals that are the symbols of Mijas. Amaya, along with countless volunteers, spent years dedicating themselves to the campaign of saving the donkeys from Mijas Pueblo. Their tireless efforts culminated with a successful Mijas Council agreement to open up a rescue in the Donkey Dreamland design.
La Sierra Restaurant celebrates the triumph of Donkey Sanctuary
Everyone is invited to the magical Summer Dinner Party at La Sierra Restaurant on Saturday 30th August. The evening will begin at 7pm and feature delicious food, refreshing drinks and great music with DJ Dave James spinning the disco hits. This event is a celebration of Donkey Dreamland and its mission to provide safe havens for Mijas donkeys, while bringing together supporters for a memorable night.
The event is a great opportunity to get together and reflect on how the rescue has inspired us, celebrate our successes, as well as continue to support the donkeys. Come and celebrate with your friends, family or donkey-loving passion at La Sierra Restaurant! Tickets are €50 per adult and €25 for children (under 12).
