Fidelio animal shelter received a visit from Áurea Peralta, the Benalmadena Council’s Animal Welfare Councillor, for a meeting which focused on advancing joint efforts to ensure all animals currently housed at the shelter find adoptive homes within the next year, and they agreed on the timeframe before the shelter’s planned closure.
We have only one year to complete this significant task. Our goal is finding adoptive homes to all the animals that are currently at Fidelio. The Council and Fidelio have been working together to find adoptive homes for all the animals currently at Fidelio.
Helen Elizabeth Williams said that 35 dogs are currently housed at the shelter, including many podencos, mastiffs, and other breeds. She said while many are affectionate and sociable, others are more shy and will need “special adoptions”. Williams expressed optimism that the first five adoptions would be completed within a week. She also encouraged interested adopters who wanted to complete the goal of a year to get in touch.
Peralta reaffirmed the commitment of the local authorities to establish an animal shelter at Benalmadena. In compliance with the Animal Welfare Law, the Council currently has a contract with the Paraíso centre, a legally recognised zoological facility, which houses over 30 animals at a daily maintenance cost of €12 each, funded by the council as required by law.
