Liverpool FC confirms that the family members of Diogo Jota, who died in 2011, will attend the Premier League season opening match at Anfield against AFC Bournemouth.
Jota, who tragically died alongside his brother Andre Silva, in a Spanish car accident on July 3, was an integral part of Liverpool’s team, and had contributed to their recent victories. Since joining Liverpool’s squad in 2020, Jota had made an impact with his goals and assists. He was also a key member of the team, contributing significantly to their recent successes.
Arne Slot, the manager, confirmed in the programme notes before the match that Jota Cardoso’s wife Rute and their three kids would be attending the game. Slot, speaking to National World said: “As previously stated, I am very proud of the tributes and honors paid by the LFC and the rest of the footballing world. Tonight, I believe we will honour them again.”
Liverpool has made several efforts to honour Jota before the match. The shirt with his number 20, which was retired, has now been retired. His No. Before kickoff will be observed a minute of silence, and the players will wear armbands black in honor. The club has encouraged fans to pay their respects through banners, applause and collective remembrance. In the weeks following his death, clubs, players and fans from around the globe have paid their respects. Jota was admired for his skill on the field, as well as his humility and character away from it.
