Wetherspoon’s global takeover starts at Alicante airport in Spain - Dilip Kuner gives his verdict

Dilip K. Kuner, a Spanish airport employee, gives his opinion on Wetherspoon’s global takeover at Alicante.

WELL, it’s official. Wetherspoon is the UK’s most loved (?) haven of cheap pints and dodgy carpets, is taking over the world – and it’s starting at Alicante Airport.

Your prayers have been answered if you ever imagined drinking a beer in the airport lounge while waiting to board your Ryanair flight at Stansted, after a long and tiring vacation. This is the future that we deserve.

It’s true that I’m not a stranger to a Wetherspoon burger, nor am I a food snob. How many of us can honestly say we’ve eaten a halfhearted one at Heathrow Airport? The opening of the first Wetherspoon in an airport seems like something out of a dream.

If you don’t want to experience the same experience as a town center with its questionable carpets and confused staff, then why not take it all the way to a major European Airport?

It has the Wetherspoon charm, with its 93 square meters of unassuming space and an outside terrace where you can enjoy your ale and the runway. And the menu is a love note to Britain and Spain.

Breakfasts, burgers, and – because we’re in Spain now – garlic prawns and Spanish omelettes. The English breakfast doesn’t seem to be quite exotic enough.

Tim Martin, who is a Brexit enthusiast and the man behind an empire that has now expanded into the EU, says that travellers will love the pub.

Why wouldn’t that be the case? What better way to start your holiday, or prepare for the flight home, than with a lukewarm pint of beer and a mild dose of existential dread. It’s like a holiday custom.

After all, after digging into a full English everyday of your fortnight in Benidorm, who wouldn’t want to tuck into yet another before a flight to England – washed down with a pint of course.

Let’s not be naive. This isn’t just about one Wetherspoon at Alicante – it’s the start of a global takeover.

Martin said that we can expect to see more pubs popping up in airports all over the world. I don’t even know if I should laugh or be scared.

Every airport has a Wetherspoon? Is there anything that is more British than drinking beer in a line?

The thought of being able to get a bargain pint while I’m waiting for my plane is strangely comforting.

We don’t require expensive sushi or five-star restaurants in our airport lounges. We need the Wetherspoon experience. The world has been waiting for it – and, frankly, it deserves it. Salute to that.
