David and Dema have been working together since about 12 years. It was time to do something different. They found the perfect location in the middle of the Fuengirola Fairground. It was a mix of locals, expats, tourists, market stallholders and local party goers from the fiestas that are celebrated at the fairground.
The place was an instant hit with everyone seeing a big sit-down meal or a little light bite and a chat with the regulars with a taste of Cádiz.
EWN: The place is busy. What’s the secret to your success?
David: We offer tapas made in the Andaluz tradition, at good prices. The biggest parking lot in Fuengirola, La Feria. We are familiar, friendly and warm. Since more and more international customers are now coming here, all the staff speak perfect English.
EWN: Who are our foreign customers?
David: Most importantly, many Brits, Finns and Norwegians come here every year. The word of mouth works here. This is a business that has no second chance. Forty percent of people who come to this market are neighbors who live in the area. We also know many of them from the weekly two markets. Also, the staff of the local hotels recommends that many tourists stay here.
EWN: Which of you two designed the tapas?
David: I and the chef. We talk about it a lot and try new things, but essentially they are an authentic taste of Andalucía, and that’s what our customers come in search for.
The tapas bar is specifically designed for casual dining. Shared dishes are available for up to 8 guests.
David: All the tapas come in plates of 4 or ‘raciones,’ 8. If I have a group of five foreigners come in, then they will order a ration (8 pieces) of oxtails croquettes. This way everyone can try them. I refuse. I’ll give you five to allow you to try another product. If you give a customer what they want and they save some money while getting good advice, they will come back to you because they won’t be conned.
