Unlicensed drugs included treatments for breast cancer or erectile dysfunction following mastectomy.

The majority of items, such as steroids and hormones, were targeted at fitness enthusiasts who worked out in gyms.

The leader of the gang imported products from Eastern countries into Europe.

The transport companies then brought the goods into Spain and Fuengirola.

Experts warned that the items were not properly stored and could be harmful to health.

In a police statement, the Policia Nacional said: “Amongst medicines, we discovered glass and unlabelled containers with pills and substances made in clandestine laboratory.”

The Fuengirola storage facility also contained an undisclosed quantity of cocaine.

Officers removed 20,000 blister packs and boxes totaling half a millon doses.

The police said that the number of substances involved in the operation made it one of the largest operations against the traffickers of anabolic steroid and other products without regulatory approval.

The Agency for Medicines and Health Product of Spain will analyse all the items.

The two arrested men were charged with crimes against the public health, and being a member of a criminal group.

As more individuals associated with this enterprise are identified, the investigation by Policia Nacional is still ongoing and further arrests may be made.
