A NEW high-speed rail network has been launched, linking Sevilla and Barcelona – two of the country’s most iconic cities – without requiring a change in Madrid.
Yesterday, on Tuesday, 23 April, the new AVE, operated by Renfe began. This service offers more efficient travel throughout Spain.
The direct route eliminates the need to transfer in the capital and reduces travel times.

From May 5, additional departures in both directions will be added to the daily schedule.
The first northbound train leaves Sevilla Santa Justa 6am. It makes scheduled stops at Cordoba and Puertollano before continuing to Zaragoza, Lleida and Tarragona.

Passengers can continue their journey to Figueres and Girona, extending the trip into the northeastern part of Spain.
Starting May 5, a second daily flight from Sevilla departs at 9.36am arriving in Barcelona six hours later, at 3.44pm.
The AVE train will depart Barcelona Sants in the opposite direction at 4.58pm. It will stop at Zaragoza and Madrid before arriving at Sevilla Santa Justa 10.49pm.
On May 5, a second southbound departure at 1.25pm will arrive in Sevilla at 6.58pm.
The direct high-speed route is expected to prove popular among tourists and business travellers.

The trip between the cities takes only five hours and forty-eight minutes. Other options can often take seven hours or more and require a change in Madrid.
The new route coincides with a larger boom in Spanish tourism, infrastructure investment and other sectors.
Barcelona will welcome over 15,000,000 visitors in 2024, and Sevilla over 3,000,000, cementing its position as one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations.
