Mayor Óscar Medina announced that “one in ten Germans traveling to Andalusia chooses Torrox,” with a 40% increase in German visitors compared to the previous year.
Torrox played an important role during the event in Berlin in terms of meetings and networking, co-hosting even a special tourism dinner gala on 4th March. The event was attended by important figures such as Andalucía’s Tourism Minister, Arturo Bernal, and the President of Turismo Costa del Sol, Francisco Salado.
Torrox, the home of 2,000 Germans
Medina talked about Torrox’s strong links with Germany. He said that the city is home to the biggest German community in the Iberian Peninsula with around 7,000 other people living or owning second homes there.
“At ITB Berlin… we’re playing on our own turf,” the mayor said, referring specifically to a strategic discussion with TSS Group. TSS Group has over 3,300 travel agencies in Germany, including 2,300 based there. Torrox will participate in the TSS Group Congress in Salzburg, Austria later this year.
Torrox invests on off-season tourism
Medina spoke at the tourism gala and recalled Torrox’s long-standing relationship with Germany that began in the 1970s. He expressed his hope for renewed German investment, and highlighted sustainable development plans in Calaceite.
The project is three million square meters in size and includes residential zones, a hotel, a golf-course, and a marina. He said the goal was to extend Torrox’s tourism season past summer by targeting German tourists who are looking for destinations with mild weather in autumn, winter and spring.
Torrox and Germany
A new housing emergency decree was also passed by the Andalusian Government, with the aim of expanding housing affordability and urban development. This initiative, he said, will improve housing accessibility in Torrox – particularly in Calaceite.
Medina also highlighted Torrox as a leader of rural tourism, and an economic hub for eastern Andalusia. The only municipality of the province of Malaga with German-only residential and commercial zones is Torrox. Torrox is also attractive because of its proximity to the Malaga Costa del Sol Airport, and Sierra Nevada.
