CSN News: Storm Laurence is the latest storm to hit Spain. Roads and parks are closed as rivers flood in Andalucia amid heavy rains and orange weather warnings.


As Storm Laurence batters Spain orange weather alerts (and rain) have forced authorities to shut down roads and parks. 

The Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued yellow rain warnings for Sevilla, Cadiz and Huelva on Monday and Tuesday.  

Sevilla is expected to receive 100% rainfall today starting at 10am, followed by storms and strong winds until 1pm.

The council has advised that residents should ensure blinds are properly secured and all loose items outside brought indoors. 

Authorities recommend that you avoid unnecessary travel. Some of the roads that have been closed include: 

  • SE-3410 in Guillena and N-630
  • SE-5209 in Las Cabezas de San Juan
  • SE-3409 Salteras
  • SE-6300 in Lebrija
  • A-8028 Gandul
  • SE-9104 in Cañada Rosal
  • A-8078 Santiponce
  • A-8004 Brenes
  • A-460 in Villaverde del Rio
  • SE-4400 in Aznalcollar
  • A-8080 in Torre de la Reina

Andalucian Emergency Services dealt with 54 cases this morning due to heavy rainfall. 

Sevilla, Huelva and Cordoba all had more than eight incidents. The majority of the incidents were traffic accidents. 

La Puebla de los Infantes saw the most rainfall in this region with 61 litres falling per square metre. 

Almaden de la Plata received 41 litres of gasoline, followed by Cazalla de la Sierra with 37 litres of gasoline, and Guadalcanal with 31 litres. 

In the province of Sevilla, three rivers burst through their banks: the Huesna at Villanueva del Rio; the Corbones at Villaverde del Rio. 

Four more rivers are also on high alert due to the risk of overflow. 

As a result rain, the train line linking Huelva to Sevilla was also cut between Niebla and San Juan del Puerto – Moguer. 

In Sevilla’s centre, several parks were closed due to the bad weather. Up to 60l/m2 is predicted for the next 12 hours. 

The Costa del Sol, Ronda and the surrounding area were expected to experience heavy rain and storms on Monday and Wednesday.

Rain will continue through the rest of the week, with a short respite Wednesday.
