Villajoyosa will restrict 13 beaches and coves in order to create healthy environments for visitors.
To warn people of the smoking ban, smoke-free signs will be posted.
The council will also launch campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers associated with smoking.
Health councillor, Maite Sanchez, said “All beach users will be able to enjoy a healthy and sustainable environmentally-friendly tourist area.”
Maite said that “not only is tobacco harmful to bathers’ health, but it also damages the environment and the condition of the sand, water, and cigarette butts.”
According to a 2018 study by the European Environment Agency, cigarette butts are the main source of beach pollution.
They can also kill marine life when swallowed.
