A MAN who was attempting to collect a debt from the Benidorm region on Wednesday was shot at three times by a resident of an apartment complex near a beach.

Around 12.30pm, the incident occurred at Torres Beach Urbanisation in Villajoyosa.

The gunman fled from the scene in his car while the Guardia Civil was still looking for him.

The 53-year-old victim was shot twice in the back, and once in a finger.

He was transported to the Marina Baixa Hospital, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening. There was a report that he would be transferred to another hospital in Elche, where he resides.

Twelve people were seen at the entrance of the Marina Baixa ER, and police officers deployed to prevent any incident.

There are few details about what happened in the urbanisation as the Guardia Civil is bound by a confidentiality order.

No identities or nationalities were revealed.

According to reports, several members of the family that buys and sells cars traveled 60 kilometers from Elche in order to collect an unpaid debt.

A fight broke out between the family and another who owed their money. Shots were fired.

Authorities conducted a sweep in the Villajoyosa region and nearby towns to find the shooter as well as to try to prevent any further incidents between two families.

A group of neighbors using a bar in the area told the Informacion newspaper they knew the suspect who had lived with his family in the apartment ‘for some time’.
