The Economic Council of the Labour Movement has released a new report.Arbejderbevægelsens Erhvervsråd, AEThe Danish Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (DIOHS) found that almost one-third of the nursing home staff in Denmark experiences severe psychological distress at work.

These findings reveal a mental health crisis that affects a wide range of industries. Social institutions and hospitality workers are particularly affected.

Stress and mental illness are widespread across all industries

The study found that 17.4 per cent of all Danish employees – equivalent to approximately 300,000 workers – struggle with a psychologically challenging work environment. The figure is significantly higher in certain industries.

  • A staggering 33,5% (or nursing home staff) report suffering from severe psychological strain.
  • 29,5% of social workers (including those in home care and institutions for children) are affected.
  • 24.5% of restaurant and hotel employees experience high levels workplace stress.
  • Only 8.9 percent of construction workers and 10.9 percent of those in the pharmaceutical sector report similar difficulties.

Poor mental health affects women more than men

Findings show that women are disproportionately impacted, with 20,3 per cent of female employees experiencing severe workplace anxiety compared to 14,8 per cent for men. The report suggests this is because women are more likely to work in social care or healthcare sectors where emotional demands and distressing situations can be common.

Workplace violence and harassment

This report found that workplace violence and harassment are on the rise. 18.3% of employees have reported harassment in the workplace in the past 12 months. 9 percent were bullied by their colleagues or managers. 8.8 per cent of workers have experienced physical violence and threats.

The AE report emphasizes the urgent need for improved mental-health policies at work, especially in industries with high risk. In Denmark, unions and labor organisations are calling on better working conditions. They include better management, a better work-life policy, and greater support for workers who may be experiencing mental strain.

These findings are important for expats who work in Denmark or are considering moving to the country. They highlight some of the challenges they face, especially in the health and social care professions.
