CSN News: Holiday-ready: Simple ways to make your home safer – CSN News

The holiday season is fast approaching. Many people are eager to travel but this also presents an opportunity for burglars.

Take steps to secure your home before leaving. Here are some tips from experts on how to keep your home secure.

Begin by securing garage doors and window. While many people lock the front door, burglars are more likely to target ground-floor or roof-accessible windows. Security can be increased by installing noise sensors or locks on windows. Do not forget your garage doors. If they lead to your home, make sure the access door is securely locked.

A video surveillance system adds extra security. IP cameras are easy-to-install and allow remote monitoring. Their presence alone can deter intruders.

Don’t Make it Obvious That You Are on Holiday

Avoid letting it be known that you’re not there. Consider solar-powered outdoor lighting, timers, and slightly raised blinds. Check all locks, and if you live in a single-family home, put furniture or plants on the front porch. You can ask a neighbour or friend to collect the mail for you and enter your home occasionally so that it appears occupied. Avoid sharing your travel plans in public or on social media.

Even with these precautions burglaries are still possible. Keep valuables in a built-in, secure safe. Also, keep them out of sight.
