The iconic Tres Xemeneies Barcelona’s cultural future will be shaped by the power plant.
The 1970s relic is named after the three massive chimneys that it has (that’s Tres Xemeneies Since its closure in 2011, the Catalan language website has been collecting dust.


But not much longer. Marvel and the architecture dream team Garces de Seta Bonet Arquitectes have released stunning visuals to showcase their new vision. E la nave va – a name borrowed from a classic Fellini flick.


In comes the creativity and out goes the coal. This transformation will transform the plant from a hulking blob into Catalunya Media City – a hub of media, technology, and public art.
The mammoth turbine hall will be reborn – with vibes straight out of London’s Tate Modern and NYC’s Park Avenue Armory.


There are 17-metre high ceilings in the sound studios and labs. And there is enough space for film festivals, virtual reality shows, and other events.
And the origins of the station have not been forgotten, with it still producing power – 4,500m² of solar panels will crown the roof, and its smart eco-friendly design will help shrink its carbon footprint.


Jonathan Marvel, architect of the project, said: “It’s about transforming an industrial past into cultural future.” With views of the Med and Badalona it looks like the second act for the power plant will be electric.
